Shallow water ecosystems are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and therefore they could be considered as a control system to those impacts. Small water bodies are often ignored despite being important ecosystems. These small lentic ecosystems increase regional biodiversity and the heterogeneity of habitat. Furthermore, these areas are highly productive areas and they allow the presence of organisms related to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

The main objective of this project is to show how lentic ecosystems enhance biodiversity  after the setup of a pond system in the quarry "La Medina". Another objective is to study the process of ecological succession of phytoplankton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes in the colonization of the quarry. This will help to value the biodiversity associated with these ecosystems. In addition we want to recognize the worth of the ecosystem from the analysis of trophic relationships between these components. Finally, we propose the creation an area for environmental education.
